Metallurgical Engineer Career Growth and Salary Insights

Metallurgical Engineer or Metallurgist is a professional engineer who is an expert in the recovery and extraction of useful metals or minerals like gold, coal, diamonds, copper and iron, out of the minerals and ores in which they are present.

There is an explosion in demand of different types of elements (metals and non-metals) with the sharp rise in industrialization and urbanization process all over the world and in particular in the third world developing nations such as India in the past few decades. These elements occur in the earth in the form of its crust, whether as a free substance, or combined with another, and must therefore be brought out of that state in a profitable manner, hence the necessity of men skilled in that occupation.

In order to do all these effectively, a metallurgist needs engineering and administrative and supervisory skills. To do justice to his work, extractive metallurgists require insight, logical thinking, a good sense of problem-solving skills and self-discipline. A skill of working with people and being able to lead them in addition to excellent communication skills can be useful to metallurgical engineers.

The job profile of Metallurgical Engineer also includes site investigation, feasibility studies, seeking viable solutions to complexities that may arise when doing the extraction work and metal activity.Metallurgical Engineer serving Government organization must operate under the requirement of the government in the area. They also prepare the cost estimates of the extraction works and extraction schedules. Metallurgical engineers on most projects collaborate in teams or in consultation with the other partner engineering official.

Eligibility of Metallurgical Engineers

Metallurgical Engineer Job Description

  • The majority of large firms that deal with the extraction of elements i.e. metallurgical processes provide accredited training programmes aimed at assisting new metallurgy graduates to master their practical skills. Graduate engineers who have been trained may then serve as extractive metallurgists at a plant or installation until they can be advanced to the level of management.
  • A graduate can also take up a career in the research and analysis sector where they can begin as a researcher in a metallurgical laboratory where they can graduate into the various specialist sectors. Graduate extractive metallurgists or process engineers are typically employed by mining companies to effect new developments.
  • In addition to being associated with a portion of some job experienced and appropriately qualified metallurgists can easily become independent consultants providing, specialist advice and service to metallurgical plants and companies and can make good money.
