Genetic Engineering Career After Degree & Postgraduate Courses – Courses, Skills & Salary

Genetic Engineer or Biotechnologist is a scientist who applies genetic and biotechnological methods to manipulate genetic material and who designs new and better living beings. The scope of his work extends to include not only the development of an antidote vaccine to a crop or microorganism that will yield a larger crop, but also to cloning the animal or even human life.

The job profile of genetic engineer involves taking DNA out of an organism, manipulation and modification through chemicals or radiation and then re-inserting it into an organism and/or a different organism. This may assist in correcting serious genetic disorders by placing normal genes into the cells where they have been lost or destroyed.

Genetic engineering is closely connected with the levels of development and further existence of living being, there is high importance and request of the professionals i.e. genetic engineers who are engaged in the practice. One of the most complex and developed forms of engineering where a wide variety of techniques are employed in manipulating the genetic material of the DNA code of a living organism, it has in a very brief period of time become incredibly important.

As more and more research work is being undertaken to come up with new verities and to enhance the already existing one, there is immense demand of genetic engineer in research and development organization and in research institutes of education hence there is immense scope of qualified genetic engineer in the genetic engineering field.

Genetic Engineer Requirements

Educational Qualification

To pursue a Bachelor Degree course in Genetics Engineering, one needs qualification 10+2 Class pass (60% marks in some reputed institutions) or appeared and with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics and genetics as part of the biology.

Skills required of a Genetic Engineer

  • Genetic Engineers are good at interpreting their test results and administering long-term observations.
  • They should also be ready to accept failed experiments and seek effective methods of reporting findings in publications or presentations to the scientific community.
  • They must be made wholesomely educated; capacity to get along with others in a team and proper morals.
  • They must be able to love your field of study/research and to demonstrate personal initiative; imaginative creative thinking and problem-solving ability.

Becoming a Genetic Engineer?

To become a Genetic Engineer one must take the steps listed:

Step 1 : Having passed +2 by the non-medical stream the aspiring candidates are required to take the engineering entrance exams such as JEE etc. to offer admission in some of the finest engineering institutions in India. Based on performance in the entrance examination and stream of their interest as chosen by them, aspiring candidate gets admission in these colleges in a four-year degree programme.

Step 2 : On successful completion of Bachelors of Genetic Engineering course, the candidate will join Government, Semi-government or Privates sector as an Assistant Engineer.Alternatively, a graduate in genetic engineering may choose to further his/her education by pursuing a Masters in Genetic Engineering then PhD and post-doctorate should he choose to pursue research or academics.

Genetic Engineer Job Description

Genetic Engineer also has the role of identifying and overseeing the laboratory testing (ex. temperature testing, microbial testing, sterility testing to name but a few of them) of different genetically modified chemicals, drugs and other products before commencing its mass production to put it into practical use. Genetic Engineer carries out research, development and testing of new processes and products in his field of specialization that could be used to enhance some natural features such as enhanced disease or damage resistance, creation of new features such as the transformation of colour, size, texture etc of plants and other living organisms.

Job Opportunities in Genetic engineering

The demand on genetic engineers is on a spurt not only in the developed world but also in the developing Asian countries such as India. These professionals predominantly work in the fields of medicine and pharmaceutical industry, in the agricultural sector, in the corporate research and development organization and research departments of numerous government organizations and educational institutes.

Genetic Engineer Salary

Genetic Engineer Salary changes with education and experience as well as with their skills and expertise in the field. Though, an eligible genetic engineer in India will have an average of between Rs.30,000 to Rs.35,000 as a take home pay. But in MNC's or offshore companies the median salary of a genetic engineer in scientific research and development services is almost 65,000 per annum. Other benefits such as paid holidays and vacations, health insurance and pension plans etc.
