Gynaecologist (Obstetrician) is a doctor/medical specialist who integrates medical and surgical treatment with women and is extremely skilled in the areas of pregnancy, childbirth and health of reproductive system.

Once, it was one of the easiest and pleasant things to give birth to a new offspring. It was regarded as a very natural process. One can hardly perceive the substantial necessity of any body to pass through this ordeal of giving birth similar to animals. However, as the lifestyle has changed and people have adopted unhealthy lifestyles, this process has become a challenging and risky process. It takes a long time of pre and post care of the women and offspring to undergo this process safely.

A physician/medical professional who involves medical and surgical treatment to women and is very qualified in the field of pregnancy, child birth and the health of the reproduction system is a Gynaecologist/obstetrician or more commonly referred to as GYNE.

A gynaecologist is an expert whose attendance and treatment is now mandatory towards the successful delivery of a child due to advanced complications during pregnancy today. The same time delivery she is a professional who plays the role of a demy god. Once this was not even regarded as a profession. Though they pay an immense price to bring to this world the noblest of creation of the God but still most of this fraternity member view it as their responsibility to do justice to their duty with the utmost care and honesty leaving some inhuman ones behind. The altered lifestyle and the overly stressed conditions there have compounded the ailments relating to pregnancy among the huge populace all over the world and more so in the third world such as the Indian subcontinent, thus rendering the profession of a Gynaecologist all the more significant in the current scenario.

But in order to qualify as a Gynaecologist, one has to work hard, has to dedicate oneself to some level of severing the society even though there is some form of remuneration in place of offering its services. Other than that one should be disciplined, patient, committed to excel in the field he/she is in and have self confidence. When you possess all these then you are qualified to be a GYNE because it is a kind of a profession where an error on your part may cost you a life worth living and devastate the fortunes of a family.

Gynaecologist Eligibility

To be a qualified gynaecologist one must pass the following course of action:

Bachelor of medicine and surgery (MBBS).

Educational Qualification

In order to be considered eligible to join MBBS course one must first possess 10+2 Class pass with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) as the main subjects and institutions which require a minimum of 60% marks.

  • The gynaecologists are expected to be patient minded, with great critical thinking and problem solving abilities.
  • They must also have the ability to reason inductively and deductively so as to analyze the information about the patients appropriately even when the patient may not give out the complete picture.
  • They also have good communication skills, a capability to work even in stressful situations and multitask.
  • They are also supposed to be able to handle your stress and others; leadership skills; skills to work as a team member.

What is the way of becoming a Gynaecologist?

Step 1 : Interested candidate must pass an entrance exam in the form of entrance test administered by the different state and Independent bodies such as the PMT, exams administered by the Punjab Government and the CBSE-PMT( pre-medical test) exams administered by the Central board to accept students in different medical institutes attached to it based on the rank of the candidate in the entrance test.

  • CBSE PMT is a popular entrance examination conducted by the CBSE being a highly coveted national level examination. It is divided into two phases, the initial and the final test. The test is objective based and puts yourself through a test in subjects such as physics, chemistry and biology. The test is highly competitive as negative marking is the norm in this case.
  • Some of the well-ranked medical establishments such as AIIMS, PGI, GMCH, AFMC Pune etc. perform the separate test.
  • These tests are commonly administered in the month of May-June and are based on Objective type questions on the topics of English, Physics, Chemistry; Biology in form of a number of questions and pattern may change with tests.
  • This is because the results of these exams are usually out by June/July.

Step 2 : Once this is finished after four and a half years of (MBBS) Degree a person is then allowed up to two years to complete the initial two years of the (Postgraduate) Degree program in medicine after completing the (MBBS) Degree. One must specialize in Gynaecology i.e. he or she must enroll in MD in that particular discipline. To join two years of MD course one must compete in an entrance examination which is taken by certain Medical Institutes of reputes such as PGIMR Chandigarh and AIIMS Delhi.

Step 3 : Upon finishing MD and registering with the respective medical association one may either choose any job in Nursing Homes or State-run hospitals or he may choose his own Nursing homes, after gaining some on-job experience.

Fees and Other Expenses: The overall course fee of an MBBS degree and GYNE specialization is between half a thousand and GYNE specialization in government college to an average of 20 lakhs and above in a private institution. 

Job Description of a gynaecologist

The work of a gynaecologist is focused on overall health of the women patients, and he cures the issues and diseases of the female reproductive system including breast and hormonal issues, urinary tract and pelvic illnesses, and cervix cancer. A gynaecologist is more often than not an obstetrician.

The scope is tremendous as per the one who is considering Gynaecologist as his or her career choice in the current scenario. Other than being hired by a private or a government hospital as an assistant GYNE, young doctors are also offered lucrative posts with huge salaries in corporate hospitals.

Several years of work and a bit of experience and a Master Degree could see a Gynaecologist earning almost a year Rs.1-12 lakhs a month. The earnings of a qualified and an able Gynaecologist have no upper limit. Another one can be a visiting Gynaecologist in various hospitals and pay on a per-hour basis.
