Immunologist is a physician with a specialized training on the treatment of allergies and other immune system diseases or disorders. The immune system of the human body is becoming weak day by day with the changing lifestyle and eating habits. It was a period when seasonal diseases were not in anyways taken as diseases because the body was capable of combating the diseases on its own. However, now that they have a weaker immune system and improper eating habits, even basic diseases such as gastrointestinal issues caused by food allergies, etc can be fatal provided that they are not addressed accordingly. And the doctor who is capable of taking care of such diseases is referred to as Immunologist.

The changed living conditions, lifestyles, and high-stress conditions there have led to the growth of the diseases and ailments affecting the large population all over the world and particularly the third world and the Indian subcontinent and hence the role of an Immunologist even more relevant in this current situation.

Educational Qualification

In order to join the MBBS course, one must have 10+2 Class pass in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) as major subjects and a minimum of 60% marks in institutions.

The steps to be followed to have course admission and other details-

Step 1 : Interested candidate must have to attend the entrance tests by the different state and Independent boards such as PMT, given by the Punjab Government, and CBSE-PMT( pre-medical test) given by the Central Board in allowing the candidates to be taken in different medical institutions attached to it depending on the ranking of the candidate in the entrance exam.

  • CBSE PMT, which is administered by the CBSE is a much-desired nation-wide entrance examination. It is administered in two parts which are the preliminary exam and the final exam. The test is test type and you cram you in the subjects such as physics, chemistry and biology. Because the test is, here, negative marked, it is very competitive.
  • Some of the best rated medical institutions such as AIIMS, PGI, GMCH, AFMC Pune, etc carry out separate tests.
  • These tests are conducted mostly in the month of May-June and include Objective type questions on the topic of English, Physics, Chemistry; Biology by a number of questions and patterns can differ with different tests.
  • The outcome of these tests is usually out by June / July.

Step 2 : On successfully completing this four and half year course of (MBBS) Degree one has to be followed by one year and six months mandatory training after which one has to specialize in a medicine and this is a medicine known as MD (medicine).

Step 3 : Upon completion of this two or three years of MD medicine course one may pursue Find and complete a fellowship program or may undergo the practical experience, by joining some Private or State-run hospitals. It is also possible that he can open his own clinic after acquiring the required affiliation or registration of the various governing bodies of the related field or profession.

Fees and Other Expenditures: The combined course fee of an MBBS degree and specialization course in Immunology in any of the government colleges is between approximately few thousand to approximately Rs 20 lakhs and more in the case of the private institutes. But in case of fellowship programs, a certain amount of remuneration is available to the candidates based on merit of the candidates and the institution where one is seeking higher studies such as Ph.D.
